What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal from the emotional distress caused by traumatic or overwhelming experiences.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to describe every detail of what happened. Instead, it works by helping your brain reprocess memories so that they no longer feel as distressing. Through bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds—your brain is guided to integrate painful memories in a healthier, more adaptive way.

Research shows that EMDR can help people recover from trauma faster and more completely than some conventional therapies. It is recognized as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization.

EMDR therapy helped me heal my body in a way I never thought possible. By addressing the physical sensations tied to my emotions, I’ve found a deeper sense of peace and healing that traditional talk therapy couldn’t provide.

HOW EMDR WORKS:

When we experience trauma, our brain’s natural way of processing information can become “stuck.” This can cause the event to feel as if it’s still happening—triggering anxiety, flashbacks, or physical tension long after the danger has passed.

EMDR helps “unstick” these memories.
During a session, your therapist will guide you to briefly recall aspects of a painful memory while using gentle bilateral stimulation. This allows your brain to process the memory more completely—reducing emotional intensity and shifting your perspective.

Over time, clients often notice:

  • Reduced anxiety or reactivity

  • Fewer intrusive memories or nightmares

  • Increased sense of calm and control

  • A more balanced, compassionate view of themselves and their past

WHAT EMDR HELPS WITH:

EMDR is best known for treating trauma and PTSD, but it can also support healing in many areas, including:

  • Childhood or complex trauma

  • Sexual assault or abuse

  • Car accidents, medical trauma, or natural disasters

  • Grief and loss

  • Anxiety, panic, or phobias

  • Depression and low self-worth

  • Emotional overwhelm related to stressful life events

If you’ve experienced something that still feels “stuck” in your body or mind, EMDR may help your system finally release it.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN EMDR:

EMDR typically follows an eight-phase process, beginning with stabilization and preparation. Early sessions focus on helping you build inner resources and a sense of safety before processing traumatic material.

Each EMDR session is collaborative and paced according to your comfort level.
Your therapist will:

  • Explain the process and answer your questions

  • Help you identify a target memory and related emotions or body sensations

  • Use eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while you recall aspects of the memory

  • Support you in integrating new, more adaptive beliefs and feelings

Many clients describe EMDR as deeply healing and even empowering—it’s not about reliving trauma, but about freeing yourself from its ongoing effects.

Why Choose EMDR?

  • Evidence-based: Proven effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief

  • Efficient: Many people experience relief in fewer sessions than traditional therapy

  • Holistic: Integrates body, emotion, and cognition

  • Empowering: Helps you build resilience and self-trust rather than focusing only on the past
